While I may prefer the more familiar modern-day aspects of games, I cannot reject the unshakable fact that Chrono Trigger is a masterpiece.Ĭhrono Trigger truly is a timeless classic everything people praise about it is true and it holds up remarkably well. Together with the quality-of-life improvements that have been carried over from the DS remake plus the great anime cutscenes make this game special. There are many endings to witness and interesting ways to get them. Oh, how I wish more games were like Chrono Trigger and focused on a great main story and few good side-quests instead of bloating games with tedious chores. There were not many side-quests only one for each character, but they were ACTUALLY engaging. The loot system was never overwhelming and had interesting traits that made me think harder about synergies between party members and tradeoffs. There are a wealth of moves, and good animations. While the story is not perfect, the characters make you care. One of the most surprising things to me was the freedom of characters to put into your party and the fluidity of unique dialogue for each character. I couldn't tell what buffs or debuffs were on my character and had no way to check, difficult to time when to revive allies, etc.) but in many other aspects it is superior to even modern day games let alone games that were released around its time. Of course, there are some shortcomings when compared to modern-day standards (e.g. Chrono trigger transcends time as one of the best JRPGS (quite on theme of the game itself).
